Last Saturday not only marked the 65th anniversary of VE Day but also the return of infamous 1940s Blitz Party to a secret London location – which was also the venue of choice for a friend's hen party.
Us girls teased our hair into victory rolls, piled on the rouge and donned our finest Forties attire for a night of lindy hopping with GIs, to the sound of a live swing band. Meanwhile, our hen was transformed into an authentic 'war bride' with a veil and homemade sash of polka dot bunting.
The venue's exposed brickwork was spotlit to recreate an air shelter, drinks flowed from a sandbag-lined bar and the cocktail menu was presented on a ration card. As we mingled with the faux airmen and imitation Rita Hayworths, we were transported back to wartime. A truly great experience in time travel!
