The 25th Bath Decorative Antiques Fair, The Pavilion, Bath

Four days of stylish interiors and antiques shopping in the beautiful city of Bath

Four days of stylish interiors and antiques shopping in the beautiful city of Bath

The renowned Bath Decorative Antiques Fair’s offering this year was style-led, with a strong focus on the home. Amid the more traditional antiques there was a refreshing mix of uber-cool Scandinavian furniture, funky lighting and beautiful upholstery - rich pickings for the style-savvy buyer.

The fair hit its 25th birthday this year and celebrated with a trade preview during the day, which drifted into an evening soiree, with fair founder Robin Coleman and Judith Miller saying a few warm words, while the H&A team enjoyed the refreshments - joining me was (from second left) editorial assistant Alice Hancock, deputy editor Dominique Corlett and editor Angela Linforth.

The Antiques Young Guns, who are currently blazing a trail across the UK, were out in force, bringing with them their signature of upbeat and entrepreneurial trading. Coming from as far away as Sweden and Scotland were James Gooch, Chris Oxley, Amanda Pickett, George Johnson, Daniel Larsson, Lily Trunfull and Jason Clarke selling everything from illuminated fairground signage and taxidermy to Regency mirrors and French furniture.

Trading opposite the H&A stand was Scandinavian By Design (who can also be found at Midcentury Modern this Sunday, 16th March). The company sells a wonderful array of classic design pieces, such as this leather and chrome ‘Falcon’ chair, designed in the 1970s by Norwegian Sigurd Ressell. It was bought, along with two others, by Dee Zammit of WB Antiques, Portobello, London for a client.

Keeping the look timeless was this 1950s polished steel and leather desk on the William Morris Antiques stand, which was destined for Rob and Julie Dyer’s large Victorian house in Bristol. ‘We’ve also bought a French elm work bench and a marble-top table that we can’t wait to get home and fit into our recently renovated home,’ they said.

Homes & Antiques subscriber Natalie Prosser and her mother Pam Swain visited the fair from south Wales after reading about it in the magazine. ‘It’s a gorgeous event and we’re really glad we made the journey, especially as I’ve found fabric that is perfect for making a luxury cushion cover - a 19th-century toile de Jouy and French ticking, bought from textile traders Sally & James Ead,’ said Natalie.

I caught up with Judith Miller (right) and Gail McLeod (second right) of Antiques News, who had just hosted a guided tour of the fair for some visitors brought to the event by Toma Haines (second left) of The Antiques Diva & Co. Toma and her Swedish counterpart and company director Andrew Skipper (left) organise European antiques buying tours that sound thrilling!

It was a pleasure to spend four days in such a beautiful decorative environment - the people at Casa Nova Antiques certainly knew how to make the most of the surroundings with their daily gourmet lunch sessions.

Do come and see H&A at a fair near you for great magazine and subscription offers as well as lots of other treats. This is where you’ll find the team popping up throughout the next few weeks:
