Auction of the week

The Bramah Collection, Lawrences, Crewkerne, Somerset, 11th October

We can hardly contain ourselves over this auction. More than 800 lots of curious silver objects come up for sale, ranging from novelty condiment holders and snuff boxes to nutmeg graters and whistles.

In 1983 Gordon L Bramah dropped into Burlington Arcade in London after being drawn in by the window display. His visit started a passionate hobby that lasted for 25 years as he collected hundreds and hundreds of these small silver items found at antiques fairs and auction houses. Now he has decided to sell them for others to enjoy.

The collection is a vast array of the wierd and wonderful: there are 1930s bird-shaped lemon squeezers, Victorian travelling inkwells, a Humpty Dumpty mustard pot, all manner of scent bottles and even a George VI battery-powered torch!

We love the delightful Mordan & Co owl-shaped propelling pencil.
