A delightfully festive fair in the heart of the West Country
On 14th December, Dee Dee’s Vintage & Handmade Christmas Fair played host to around 25 local traders selling pretty vintage and handmade treats in a village hall packed with last minute Christmas shoppers. Organiser Delia West and her husband John offered a very warm welcome to all, with help from Midi, their good natured Retired Greyhound Trust dog.
Looking very festive with red tinsel and fairy lights was illustrator Amanda Perkins’ stand. Amanda, who lives and works just outside Taunton in the Blackdown Hills, designs and hand-draws her extensive range of retro-inspired cards, all of which have a cheerful and cheeky charm to them.
Notting Hill vintage shop owner Dolly Diamond paid the fair a visit as she lives locally. Dolly, who's legendary shop closed this summer, bought these two little gems as Christmas gifts for her ex-seamstress Sandra and her young son, who live in Germany.
‘I love the little van which, believe it or not, is actually a working 1950s Radio Luxembourg radio, and the pink 1930s Bakelite cruet set will look perfect alongside Sandra’s other vintage kitchenalia,’ said Dolly.
Buying gifts for themselves from the Cherry Beau stand were sisters Emily Fishleigh and Anna Francombe. They were trying to finish off their Christmas shopping but were sidetracked by these two little knitted characters, a Christmas fairy and a white mouse in a jolly festive jumper. Who wouldn’t!
Miranda Nicholson was delighted to find this complete set of vintage ‘tree lamps’ on The Washerwoman's stand. ‘I have a friend who can rewire them and then they will go around my fireplace for Christmas,’ said Miranda.
When I wasn’t chatting with visitors and readers I was doing my usual walk around taking photos and trying not to buy everything in sight. The little ballerina fairy in the net skirt on the Cybel’s Vintage stand really caught my eye.
As the day came to a close and I was getting ready to pack up my last fair of the year, I felt I couldn’t leave empty-handed so I treated myself the the much lusted-after fairy and was given the little decorative gold tree as a gift. What more could a girl want for Christmas?
Having attended over 100 fairs in 2013, Alice and her team of Homes & Antiques agents are taking a break over Christmas but will all be back on the road in the new year. In the meantime, don’t forget to pop these dates in your diary. See you next year!
