Did Ramsgate have a sphinx?

Can you shed any light on this mysterious plate?

H&A editor Angela Linforth was browsing Gloucester Antiques Centre the other day when she came across this curious plate, which has us all baffled. Decorated with a sphinx, camel and palm trees, the plate is not, as you might think, a souvenir from Egypt. Instead it is inscribed: 'A present from.... [ wait for it] .... Ramsgate.'

Last time we visited, the Kent seaside town wasn't exactly heaving with desert oases, so we want to hear why you think Ramsgate was promoted in this way. Post your suggestions below - the most interesting or amusing answer will be published in the next issue of the magazine.
