Adams Antiques Fair at The Royal Horticultural Halls, London

Treasure hunters gather at London’s longest-running monthly antiques fair

Adams Antiques Fairs, run by Matthew Adams (below), has been welcoming traders and visitors to the splendour of The Royal Horticultural Halls for a very successful 25 years. With a solid reputation among buyers, a loyal following of traders and a great offering of collectables and curiosities, it's clear to see why this fair has thrived.

The business is very much a family affair with three generations of Adams in attendance on fair days, including the much-loved, and grandly named, family dog Miss Scamperford Duckington-Potter!

My visit coincided with Remembrance Day, which made London very busy, and it was touching that a minutes silence was observed at the fair. Celile Gemmell of Elegance Maison paid homage to wartime Britain with this fabulous World War One victory dress made from varying sizes of silk flags. ‘I thought it would be nice to bring out a bit of wartime history for the day,’ said Cecile. If it's fashion you're looking for in London then do visit Matthew's other well-loved event Frock Me! Vintage Fashion Fair held at Chelsea Town Hall.

Couture designer and boutique owner Basia Zarzycka was on the look out for trimmings for her wonderfully elegant pieces and bought these Victorian kid gloves to transform into something new. ‘They will be altered and maybe mixed with some old lace and feathers to give them a new lease of life,’ she said.

Someone else with a love of all things Victorian is jet jewellery trader Allison Massey. ‘Although I mostly trade in jet, I love to pick up other bits that stir my curiosity. This cloth-paged scrap book really caught my eye. If it could speak, it would undoubtedly have an interesting story to tell us,’ she said.

The fair attracts many overseas buyers and I couldn’t help but notice that this trio were on a shopping mission! Ruth Broudo (right) owns Hotel Montefiore, a boutique hotel in Tel Aviv, and was buying pieces to help complete the British Colonial look she’s gone for. ‘The twelve rooms feature glass, silver and monochrome, which gives a wonderful air of elegance,’ she said. There to help out were friends Yael Eshet (left) and Hagit Goldberg (centre).

Marilyn Gentry, who lives in Cornwall and works in London two days a week, often plans her working days around visiting antiques fairs. Marilyn has been reading H&A for many years now and took the opportunity to take out a much-needed subscription so as she can keep track of when the best fairs are on around the country. She was delighted with the free copy of Romantic English Homes she received too.

Here’s where you’ll find our festive stand during the next few weeks. Do visit us for great offers on magazines, subscriptions and gifts.
