Arthur Swallow Fairs Decorative Home & Salvage Show, Tatton Park, Cheshire

Alice Roberton enjoys two days of gorgeous homeware inspiration at one of the UK’s finest historic estates

The family run Decorative Home & Salvage Show’s debut appearance at Tatton Park showcased around one hundred carefully selected traders. Weatherwise it was a weekend of two halves which presented glorious sunshine on the Saturday and drizzle on the Sunday, although the latter didn't deter the hoards who still came out to shop with gusto.

The fair offered everything from tables laden with Hungarian enamelware and Greek grape buckets, as seen on sale at Baytree (above), to pretty French dressing tables, decorative gardenware and pieces of original art.

H&A subscribers Alf and Barbara McClughan from Chorlton were inspired to buy a dovecote after seeing one in the pages of our July issue. ‘We saw a dovecote featured in the Auction Price Guide and thought it was just what we needed to add character to a corner of our garden, so we came here today to see if we could find something suitable, and we have!’ they said.

Other inspired visitors were friends Amy Thompson and Tammy Ogden who plan to repurpose their buys. The ladder will be put to good use as a clothes hanger, the enamel bucket to store bath towels and the sledge will be adapted to make some free-standing shelves. ‘We got the idea from the Attic Gems stand. It’s such a simple and effective way to use it,’ said Tammy.

Gill Harbach paid the H&A stand a visit and bought a lovely set of platters. She had some great feedback about the magazine. ‘It’s the only magazine I read from cover-to-cover. I especially love the factual information. There’s always something new to learn,' she said.

Antique dealers Andrea and Terry Wollaston from Buxton were shopping to order for a client who Terry described as a ‘deck chair doer-uper’. I’m sure she’ll be delighted with their haul from The Duck Shed stand.

I have a weakness for French antiques so visiting Daniella Lichter’s stand, which was piled high with intriguing and unusual pieces, I felt like a child in a sweet shop. Daniella was sharing a pitch with fellow trader Gordon Kennedy. The pair also trade together at The Vintage Rooms in Matlock, Derbyshire.

Jane Emery’s stand also had a great look, with lots of pretty things for the home and garden and summery flowers popping out of every available bucket, bird bath and wheelbarrow.

Andrew Stuart runs an industrial salvage business, The Font Archive, based in Manchester, and has recently acquired the remains of Linotype’s font library, which consists of thousands of hand-drawn master drawings of letter forms. They have a certain historic charm and would look great on any wall.

The Decorative Home and Salvage show is well established at Harrogate’s Ripley Castle and Cheshire Showground but if you’re in the South East then head to their first event to be held at Loseley Park, near Guildford, on 26th - 27th July.

This is where H&A will be popping up throughout the country during the next two months.
