Dairy House Antique & Vintage Textile Fair, Semley, near Shaftesbury

A sunny day of rich pickings for those with a passion for heritage textiles

A sunny day of rich pickings for those with a passion for heritage textiles

Dairy House Antiques is a one-stop shop of desirable things for interiors and exteriors, as well as plenty to inspire makers of all levels. And, if you’re looking to treat yourself, there are cabinets filled with gorgeous jewellery, keepsakes and trinkets too.

Occupying the labyrinthine former dairy building are a host of in-house traders with inviting room sets, as well as, for this special event, which took place on 13th April, a dozen or so out-of-town traders who set up shop under the whitewashed veranda out front.

A regular on the west country vintage scene is the lovely Pearl Lowe, who was duly impressed with the offerings at Dairy House. ‘I’ve bought a few little textile pieces including this delicate satin tulle dress for my seven-year-old daughter, Betty,’ she said.

I loved the practical yet stylish winter jumper storage solution of Jane Wilson (right). ‘I have a lot of woollens, which are always a problem to store at this time of year. This trunk is perfect and will make a great feature in my bedroom,’ she said.

Lucy Cameron (left) bought a large glass jar that was doing a brilliant job housing freshly cut tulips. ‘It would look lovely on a garden lunch table now the weather is cheering up,’ she said.

Trading next to me was Morag Pearce (right), who sold this 1950s floral handmade hook rug to Fiona McDonnell (left). Fiona owns textiles and gift shop Daisy May in Wareham. ‘I have a vintage room within the shop where this rug will fit in well,’ she said.

Making a statement with this unusual handmade cross-stitch poncho was resident Dairy House trader Linda Ball. Linda sells a mix of furniture, lighting, textiles, paintings and jewellery with her husband Martin. ‘We’ve been trading here for almost seven years and we always look forward to the textile fair,’ she told me.

Dee Attwood is another regular visitor to fairs in the area and also sells decorative items and textiles at some of the larger fairs, such as Shepton Flea. Dee’s trusty 21-year-old shopping companion Timothy knows how to shop in comfort. That’s experience for you!

Though glorious weather meant that it was a joy to be outside, step over the threshold into the main building and you were instantly immersed in a world of eclectic goodness. Every corner offered a feast for the eyes - and for the nose, as the smell of fresh coffee drifted across from the newly opened Tea Shed cafe.

The last time I saw Anne Francis she was making plans to open a shop. And so she has. Vintage et al opened its doors in October 2013 in Warminster’s Silver Street selling decorative antiques, vintage finds and textiles such as these classic French linens and tickings she bought from La Camionnette Bleue.
