H&A’s newest recruit, Suzanne Chopping, was in full swing selling the summery August issue, magazine subscriptions and her own wonderful handmade goodies by the time I arrived at the Guildhall Vintage & Antiques Fair last Sunday. This year-old fair takes place monthly and offers an eclectic mix of antiques, collectables, memorabilia, vintage and retro for those hunting a bargain.

Fair organiser Sam Mountford loves finding unusual items at her event. ‘My kitchen has a French retro look and, although British, this 1940s butter churn will make a lovely feature,' she said.

Suzanne and I loved chatting to enthusiastic collectors and devoted H&A readers, Glenda Knott and her son Matthew Crowson from Leicester. Matthew has been collecting glass and silver for 25 years and was happy to have found these hand-blown, hand-painted 1930s martini glasses to make up a set he’s been trying to complete for some time.

Other successful shoppers were Samantha Trunbull and Ryan Smith who were scouring the fair for plates to use for Samantha’s daughter’s vintage themed wedding next June.

Sue Ward and helper Phil Smith showed me some lovely pieces with personal history, including this British Red Cross cape complete with badges of places the original owner had travelled to during her service. Sue recently started trading as Peg Bag from her home in Derbyshire and hand selects British made stock.

Another piece with a story to tell was this 1940s first aid box marked with the words ‘Ellistown Colliery’ on Lindsay Gordon’s stand. We discussed how these kind of personal effects are so intriguing and rich in history - just one of the many aspects of vintiquing that makes it so compelling!
