H&A at The Bath Brocante

Alice Roberton reports on a day in the park with a French twist

The sun came out to welcome the first Bath Brocante of the year which, after the recent unseasonal weather, brought plenty of vintiquers out to soak up the atmosphere in Alice Park.

Organiser Katherine Gilmore, above, loves French brocantes so she thought she'd bring a taste of antiquing Gallic-style to Alice Park in Bath on Sunday 12th May. And, with delicious aromas wafting over from The Alice Park Cafe, handmade bunting blowing in the breeze and just the right mix of traders, she managed to pull it off.

There were so many wares to pore over but I especially liked this tea set on Katherine’s stand - if only I had room for more china!

With the park as a backdrop, the H&A stand looked fresh and our vintage cushion covers were especially popular. This event was another great opportunity to chat to readers and sign up new subscribers.

Next to me was Scrapiana, a fabulous business offering vintage haberdashery, textiles, sewing workshops and handmade loveliness! Owner Eirlys Penn has a great enthusiasm for what she does and is a contributing writer to the inspirational sewing book Mend It Better.

I had a lovely chat with friends Serena Simpson and Mel Brooke who were trading side-by-side selling painted French furniture, pretty embroidery and hand-crafted items with delicate beadwork. They explained that they have plans to go into business together and are currently on the hunt for the perfect setting: 'We would love a semi-rural barn to transform into a making and retail experience’, explained Serena.

The new owner of this French dresser, above, seemed chuffed with his purchase.

All in all, it was a great event and, if you're inspired to visit, there are two more this summer - Saturday 9th June and Saturday 14th July (which is, appropriately, Bastille Day).

H&A will also be attending the following fairs over the next few weeks:

Saturday & Sunday 26th/27th MK Handmade & Vintage Weekend Extraveganza, The Centre (Next to John Lewis) Milton Keynes.

Saturday 23rd Fabulous Vintage & Handmade Fair, Shalford Village Hall, Nr Guildford.

Saturday 30th The Giant Vintage Rag Market, Cheese & Grain, Frome.
