H&A at MK Handmade & Vintage Weekend Extravaganza

Alice Roberton reports on a scorching weekend in Milton Keynes

Held in the unlikely setting of the Central Milton Keynes Shopping Centre, MK Handmade & Vintage, with its 100 stalls looking cheery under green and white striped canopies, managed to draw a crowd despite the soaring temperatures outside.

Being so close to the Diamond Jubilee, there was an abundance of flags, bunting, vintage tins and crockery. One person flying the flag was Suzanne Chopping of Hearts n Kisses, who makes lovely gifts using vintage and vintage-inspired fabrics. I was most taken with her pinnies made from old tablecloths, laces and tapes.

I had an inspirational conversation with Sally Hutson of StitchyWooWoo. Sally, a textiles historian who lectures at Milton Keynes College, has a passion for using vintage fabrics and making them relevant. She demonstrates this beautifully in the pretty jackets she makes out of damask tablecloths, 1940's doilies and lace which she then embellishes with free motion embroidery.

It was so lovely to see everyone in their summer attire, with many people sporting on-trend pastels. Homes & Antiques readers Angela and Katy Thurnham stopped by to enthuse about the fair, the magazine and the cushions they bought from me that matched their outfits beautifully!

Across the fair from the H&A stand I found Michelle Quintanilla of Mimi's who described her style as ‘pretty and vintage with a French feel’. If money was no object I could have happily bought her whole stand.

Subscriber Janice Issitt from The Dandelion House took some photos of the H&A stand and told me about her business, which she runs with Nichole Sleet, offering an interior styling and staging service. ‘We love to create spaces that are as interesting as the people who live in them,’ said Janice.

The next MK Handmade & Vintage event is on 8th-9th September and then again on 3rd-4th November.

H&A will be visiting the following fairs this June, hope to see you there for some midsummer fun...

Saturday 23rd, Fabulous Vintage & Handmade Fair, Shalford, Nr Guildford, Surrey.
