Alice Roberton discovers an eclectic fair at the foot of The Black Mountains
The Vintage & Antiques Fayre, held in the centre of the lovely market town of Crickhowell, is a friendly affair with a broad range of vintage, antiques and bric-a-brac. It attracts, by all accounts, a hardcore of bargain hunting H&A fans including avid reader Suzanne Hughes, who was visiting with her sister-in-law Barbara Owen. She picked up this cute pair of pressed glass candle-holders for a mere pound.
Trading next to me were H&A
devotees Kevin Dunster and John Rees, both serious hobby traders who have a love of vintage and its rich history. John (right) is a fount of knowledge when it comes to the stories of notable makers, with Clarice Cliff
being a personal favourite. As well as knowing his history, he also loves to share the story of what he’s selling which makes buying from him a real treat.
I loved the lavish upcycling job Helen Powell from Townsend Designs
did on this Victorian ladies knee-hole desk. ‘I work as a sampler for Watts of Westminster
and I bought this Bird Burrows wallpaper, before it went out of stock. I thought it would be interesting to use for a decoupage project,’ Helen explained. A success I’d say!
I was introduced to Welsh tapestry blankets on my visit and heard how they are having a revival. Sarah Elam-Eager of Sara & Heart
said: ‘They are very fashionable again and the price of them has doubled from around £60 to £120 in the last few years. If I come across badly damaged blankets, I make them into cushion covers.'
Someone planning on a cosy winter was Nicky Abbott from nearby Abergavenny. ‘I plan to use this blanket as a throw on the sofa in my sitting room; it is quite minimal with a few feature antique pieces,’ she said.
Millicent Granger from Newport snapped up this picnic basket while clutching sixteen-week-old Kim, a Pug/Jack Russell cross. ‘I might even use it for Kim’s treats!’ she said.
It was a great fair of rich and eclectic pickings, from books and old postcards to collectable china and jewellery and all in gorgeous Welsh countryside. Fabulous vintiquing!
