Alice Roberton enjoys the hustle and bustle of a busy market
The monthly Vintage & Antiques market in Bath's historic former railway station has gone from strength-to-strength over the past year. The atmosphere has a real buzz to it and organiser Naomi Knight has thrown her all into putting Bath firmly back on the map as a vintiquing mecca. As well as this, she is also running a new fortnightly ‘Trade Tuesday Market’ at the same venue along with regular Vintage Fashion Fairs.
A regular stand at the market is Ted & George Collectables, run by Stuart Withers, who sells Beswick & Royal Daulton animal figures and other modern collectables. Stuart wasn’t keen to have his photograph taken but his wife Maureen and their new collie puppy, Jack, were more than happy to step into the frame.
The market really is a treasure trove; whether you’re looking for a cashmere sweater, a 1950’s dress, pine furniture, soft furnishings, kitchenalia, leather luggage or vintage knick-knacks. Around every corner there is a great buy to be had and inspiration by the enamel bucket-full.
Attics & Angels, run by Adele Kammeyer from Warminster in Wiltshire, caught my eye. Her stand demonstrates just how possible it is to make functional pleasantly decorative.
I had briefly met Rebecca Engels and Lois Pinnock when they were visiting The Vintage Bazaar in Hartley Wintney a couple of weekends ago so it was nice to find them trading just across from me in Bath. They explained how they have teamed up, with Rebecca hand-making wonderful bags, cushions and accessories and Lois selling pretty decorative items.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of an impulse buy of an item you are going to wonder how you ever lived without for so long! A customer at Lois Kirsten was overjoyed when she found a pair of miniature bird salt and pepper shakers.
So, if you want atmosphere and great shopping then head to Bath for the last Sunday of every month. Homes & Antiques will be back there for the Bath Vintage & Antiques Christmas Market on Sunday November 25th and we'll be featuring last year's in our Christmas issue, which is out on November 1st.
