H&A reader day at Moorcroft

A behind-the-scenes peek at the intricacies of making a Moorcroft pot

A behind-the-scenes peek at the intricacies of making a Moorcroft pot

There’s nothing like seeing the process that goes in to making a pot to really appreciate it, especially a piece of collectable Moorcroft.

Thanks to a collaboration with the Moorcroft pottery, last Friday H&A were able to offer 15 readers the chance to see the painstaking craft that goes into Moorcroft ceramics, and were lucky enough to go along ourselves.

We started the day with an entertaining talk by Eric Knowles who has an intimate knowledge of the pieces and who regaled us with brilliant stories of his Northern upbringing and ‘potoholic’ tendencies (above).

Then, with a whistlestop tour of Moorcroft’s 100-year history under our belts, we were shown the factory. With artisans like the incredibly talented tube-liners (who draw the designs onto the pots ready for the painters to flood with colour, below), it would be more fitting to call the ‘factory’ a workshop such is the air of quiet concentration.

Unfortunately for us, the painters and tube-liners make their craft look far easier than it really is as we discovered when faced with lining and painting our own coasters after a glass of wine or two at a delicious three-course lunch at The Potters' Club. Appropriately it was hosted in the very room where the great potters of Stoke-on-Trent used to meet for lunch.

Many of our readers turn out to be far more talented than us (below left, alongside our effort, right). It looks like Moorcroft have a raft of potential employees!

Look out for details of our next reader event with Judith Miller in our February issue, out on 2nd January
