Alice Roberton reports on a day of West Country vintage shopping heaven
Last Saturday (21st April) I headed off to the Somerset town of Frome for The Vintage Bazaar at the Cheese & Grain. Packed full of the finest nostalgic homewares, gorgeous gardenalia and stylish fashion and accessories, it was a vintage shoppers' paradise.
Organisers Lizzie Van Hasselt and Clare Powell, above, have their fingers firmly on the pulse of the vintage scene.
Just along from the H&A stand, I found Pots & Pansies, which had the most fabulous selection of gardenalia, including trugs, botanical books, pretty seed packets, hessian sacks, field guides and trays of speciality flowers. Adorned with freshly cut blossoms and little ornamental birds, it was full of the joys of spring.
There was a real emphasis on pretty at this fair, with lots of florals, embroidery, lace and pastel colours - not least at the stall of vintage corsage company Fading Grace. Owner Sophie Lewis describes herself as ‘a maker and collector of all things curious, unusual and pre-loved’ and her corsages went down so well she’d almost sold out by the time I popped by to say hello.
I also had the pleasure of catching up with Devon trader Donna Flower, who sells the most fabulous selection of vintage and antique fashion, textiles, fabrics and haberdashery. Her wonderful collection of summer dresses, including a few Horrockses pieces, were difficult to resist.
Jan Sloss came by and bought a chic metal food cover for the new B&B she's opening in Weymouth later this month. B'n’B 23 (01305 776111) is in a five-storey Georgian town house with sea views, and all rooms come with a splash of French luxury. 'This food cover will be perfect for our butler service,' she said.
Vintage fair organiser Keeley Harris was on a buying visit to stock up on summer pieces for her shop The Vintage Emporium in York. Her bags were overflowing with wonderful hats and 1940s dresses, which she said would make for an eye-catching window display.
H&A will be attending Keeley's The Festival of Vintage this weekend (28th-29th April). We hope to see you there in all your vintage finery!
