Sofa Design

Brothers Barry and Mike Hackworthy took over Sofa Design from their father 24 years ago and have evolved the company from a re-upholstery business to manufacturing classic and modern sofas, all from their Essex workshop.

‘We wouldn’t consider moving production anywhere else,’ explains Barry. ‘If someone requests a design, we can produce it in four to six weeks – which wouldn’t be possible otherwise.’

And although there are around 30 designs in the collection (and around 10,000 fabrics to choose from), the team are also happy to work to bespoke designs, something the makers of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were happy to take advantage of recently when they commissioned the firm to make Willy Wonka’s chair. There are two showrooms in Essex, with another opening in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire in June.
