Shopping in the magical Spiegeltent on Bristol’s Harbourside
Bristol’s busy harbourside was abuzz with Christmas cheer last Saturday when the show-stopping Spiegeltent hosted Magpies & I Vintage and Handmade Christmas Market. Built in Belgium during the late 19th century as a travelling entertainment salon, The Spiegeltent is a jewel of a venue. Visitors flocked through its giant wooden doors all day long to enjoy music, drink delicious mulled cider and peruse the fabulous wares on offer.
The market, which also ran the previous weekend, was organised by Sian Titchener (pictured left), who I caught up with on the Prince Lilly stall. ‘I’m really happy with the crowd and very proud of the creative talent in Bristol, the fair has been a roaring success,’ she said.
H&A reader, and regular visitor to my stand, Ali Binns came to show me these lovely sparkly shoe clips she had bought from Head Full of Feathers. ‘They’ll be perfect for the party season,’ she smiled.
I spotted Esther Curtis, who works on Perfect Wedding, another title published by Immediate Media in Bristol. She was helping her mum Stephanie sell cosy baby booties. Stephanie, who runs Babootska (01981 510620) from Herefordshire, makes the booties from the finest sheepskin and merino wool. I have a feeling Esther’s expected baby will never have cold feet.
The market spilled out on to Bristol’s historic waterfront where I found lots of jolly traders selling a mix of luggage, hats, clothes, homewares and handmade goodies. You couldn't miss this stuffed badger, dressed somewhat eccentrically, on the Retrolex stall.
I found Sarah White of Foxglove Flowers knitting away to keep warm while selling her lovely ‘inspired by nature’ Christmas decorations.
Dynamic duo Erica Taylor and Zoe Gibbons of Taylor & Gibbons were having a great day, too, with customers raving about their handmade, recycled and upcycled accessories.
H&A readers Amy and Malcolm Hamilton were delighted to have their photograph taken on their stall Rhubarb Jumble, where they were selling homeware, kitchenalia and clothes. ‘We love Homes & Antiques and so look forward to it every month,’ said Amy.

Do come and visit me at my last fair of 2012, details below, and keep an eye out for my January 2013 dates, which will be posted on Facebook and which you can find in the January issue of Homes & Antiques, out now.
