Two delightful days of botanical exploration with some quality antique and vintage shopping
Set against the backdrop of flora, fauna and rolling Welsh countryside this fabulous two day Derwen Fairs and Antiques event pulled in large numbers of H&A readers keen to explore The Botanical Gardens of Wales and root out some great vintage and antique finds.
To wander around was a delight, with traders selling in every corner of the site, from The Great Glasshouse to an outside brocante area. The perfect start to another year on the road!
Homes & Antiques reader Cathy Griffin from Carmarthen was drawn to the fair for the stunning setting and was very pleased to find this botanical print on the H&A stand. ‘It will look lovely in my bedroom,’ she commented.
Marie-Clare Blythe, who is both trader and organiser of The Vintage and Antique Fayres in Crickhowell and Cowbridge, had a tempting array of enamelware, Welsh blankets, tins and textiles. Marie-Clare has just secured Solihull Ice Rink to run her event so do check it out if you’re in the area.
The sun shone blissfully throughout Saturday which made browsing in the world’s largest single span glasshouse even more of a pleasure!
Cate Lovett of St Davids in North Pembrokeshire was on a mission to find nautical/industrial lighting for her recently converted barn. Success came in the form of this ship’s port light engraved with the year 1944. ‘The barn looks very new so I’m looking for things to give it a more lived-in feel,’ she said.
As the sun shone on there was plenty to look at outside of the temperate climes of The Great Glasshouse, with traders setting-up outside the old stable blocks and in marquees.
The labyrinthine Principality House (behind) also played host to a great range of traders. With the help of friend Christine Harris, Mary Davies (pictured left) picked up this dark blue trunk to house her ever-growing bag collection.
Botanical Garden members Janette Yates and Pat Powell had a wonderful day out and Janette went home with this Victorian chair for her bedroom. ‘It will fit in with the scheme just as it is,’ she said.
Late on Sunday afternoon, Anne Morgan from Swansea made a last-minute purchase from local trader Eileen Hunter in the form of this blue and white decorative jug. ‘It really caught my eye and I plan to use it for cut flowers,’ she said.
Do come and see H&A at a fair near you for great magazine and subscription offers as well as lots of other tabletop treats.
