Mark Hill and Mel Giedroyc meet the UK's most determined collectors
H&A contributor Mark Hill and The Great British Bake Off's Mel Giedroyc have teamed up to explore the nation's love of collecting in Collectaholics, which begins tonight (12th March) at 8pm on BBC Two.
Each episode features three glorious eccentrics. Tonight's programme includes airline steward Ben, whose home is a shrine to the 1930s and 40s, as well as Stuart, whose love of railway memorabilia led to him constructing a 1950s railway station in his back garden to house his 1,000-strong collection of railway signs.
He also has a garage full of 'petroliana', not to mention 6,000 items of packaging in his attic.
Then there's Nick and his 7,000 beer cans. 'They didn't let us see the collections before they actually filmed us, so they got our honest reactions on camera,' explains Mark.
'Seeing the beer can collector, who had thousands of empty cans on shelves covering the walls, was pretty unbelievable. I was so surprised I fell backwards over the doorstep!'
