Passion for Fashion, Kerry Taylor Auctions, La Galleria, Pall Mall, London, 29th November
The stars of the silver screen and the doyennes of haute couture steal the show at this sale. The star lot (£40,000-£60,000) is this ivory lace gown, pictured, designed by Edith Head and worn by Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (1953). Hepburn later had it redesigned and wore it again to collect her Oscar for the same film in 1954.
'It was her only Oscar and the success of the film confirmed her status as a major star,' says Kerry Taylor. 'This was the period when she called off her wedding to James Hanson and the sale includes invitations and letters relating to the cancellation.'
Also in the sale are several examples of 19th-century menswear, while handbag fetishists are well served with vintage Hermès pieces. A 1960s midnight blue 'Piano' crocodile handbag is estimated at £700-£1,000.
