H&A's Alice Roberton discovers great vintage, antique and handmade finds on the edge of the Brecon Beacons

H&A's Alice Roberton discovers great vintage, antique and handmade finds on the edge of the Brecon Beacons

Organiser Marie-Clare (pictured left) offers everyone a warm welcome to her Crickhowell fayre and shows her support to a range of traders selling antiques, vintage and heritage-inspired makes.

It’s a cosy affair with around 20 traders and a pop-up tea shop. Carol Millward of Vintage Roses (pictured right) has an eye for the nostalgic and pretty and is a regular trader at these events.

It was a joy to meet up with trader John Rees again. His passion for the trade is infectious. Last time we met we talked about Clarice Cliff - a personal favourite of John’s - but this time he gave me the lowdown on Wales’ oldest pottery, Ewenny, which, established in the 18th century is still going strong today. John very kindly gave me a piece from his collection as a gift. Thank you, John!

Talking of pottery, sometimes something just jumps out at you and it doesn’t matter where it was made or by whom, as Caroline Wilbud of nearby Llangynidr knows all too well. ‘I have a colourful collection of jugs displayed on a dresser. I just pick things up that interest me, so long as they are bright and cheery and a bit unusual. This new addition will go beautifully,’ she said.

Another spontaneous buy was this rather lovely bolster-style cushion bought by Alex Thompson, who was visiting the fayre for the first time from Hay-on-Wye. The cushion was made by Helen Powell of Townsend Designs using a silk velvet for the backing and a 1950s floral cotton for the front.

Textile artist Claire Cawte and daughter Daisy-Blue visited the fair for inspiration, which came in the form of H&A’s Guide to Upcycling and a subscription to Homes & Antiques. ‘The magazine is a great resource to someone like myself who is in the trade and, of course, the May issue couldn’t be more perfect with its textiles focus,’ Claire commented.

For a small event there was a lot to look at. These two visitors were feasting their eyes on a Georgian Cabouchon 22 carat Garnet ring on Jane and Peter Herbert’s fabulous jewellery stand. My eyes kept wandering towards their wonderful Georg Jenson pieces!

The H&A stand was looking bright and springlike with its fresh daffodils, bright cerise cloth, Indian Tree vase and Portmeirion Totem soup set. I picked up the little pile of vintage textile cotton and bark-cloth pieces to take to my next fair - Dairy House Antique & Vintage Textile Fair this coming Sunday (13th April).

Do come and see H&A at a fair near you for great magazine and subscription offers as well as lots of other treats. This is where you’ll find the team throughout the next couple of months.
