Alice Roberton enjoys a day at one of the West Country’s finest vintage fairs
The Corn Exchange in Devizes is transformed into a treasure-trove of vintage fashion, textiles and homeware when The Vintage Bazaar comes to town. The bi-annual event has a sociable atmosphere - ideas are shared, inspiration is sought and great one-off pieces are found.
Chez Williams from Bristol found this striking pair of safari animal-print curtains in classic bark cloth for her new grandchild’s bedroom. ‘I love coming to these events, I always feel inspired’ she said.
Another style-seeker was fashion textile designer Peter Westcott who visited from London to look for inspirational pieces for future collections. ‘I design for all the big fashion houses, from Ralph Lauren right through to Boden - this fruity little number will assist with spring/summer 2015,’ he said.
Even if you don’t have a plan in mind when visiting this fair it’s very easy to find one along the way as there is so much to draw inspiration from.
Ted & Bunny trader Elaine Kirsch had a grand idea when she decided to give this old tin trunk a new lease of life with some favourite vintage scraps and a pot of Mod Podge glue - even the rusty bits coming through the fabric add to the charm. H&A will have a stand at Elaine’s forthcoming fair, Vintage in the Village Hall, Blandford Forum next Monday (24th) from 10am until 4pm.
Lampshade designer Joanna Heptinstall, who bought this pretty summery floral picture to add to a growing theme in her living room, has just launched a new project called @The Farm. ‘We offer interiors workshops on everything from crochet through to upholstery. We can even teach you how to use your sewing machine to get you started,’ she said.
Fair co-organiser Liz Van Hasselt sold this piece of nautical filet crochet to Sam Austin from Swindon. ‘My father is about to undergo hospital treatment and I want to make him a homecoming tablecloth,' she said. 'He loves all things seafaring so the crochet detail of ships, Union Jacks and the words "welcome home" make for the perfect edging to a larger cloth,' she explained.
Will & Bea owner Hayley Rusling is still in her first year of trading but is already a regular on the scene, selling pretty china, glassware, linens and candy-stripe flannelette sheets.
Helen Kennedy from Gloucester made a spontaneous purchase at the Savoy Art Deco Collectables stand with this English-made wall mask dating from 1933. ‘It will go in my sitting room which has quite a grand Rococo style!’ she said.
Do come and see H&A at a fair near you for great magazine and subscription offers as well as lots of other treats. You can find the team at these events over the next few weeks.
