Vintage & Handmade Textile & Fashion Fair in Chipping Sodbury

Alice Roberton pays another visit to this vintiquer's heaven in Gloucestershire

The Original Vintage & Handmade Textile & Fashion Fair held in Chipping Sodbury four times a year is one of the most popular vintage fairs on the scene, always offering a wonderful mix of traders selling the most gorgeous fabrics, trimmings and one-off fashion pieces. Polly Herbert (above) soon found what she was looking for on her daughter-in-law Anna's stand selling children’s vintage clothes and toys. She bought a pretty little cotton dress for her newest granddaughter.

Cousins Elizabeth Bennett and Sue Brown regularly meet up at this fair to collect items for projects. ‘I’m always on the lookout for mother-of-pearl, beaded flowers and other bits and bobs,’ said Sue (above right), who showed me this unusual crochet example.

I had a good chat with Gertie Strahl of Treutmade about the Suffolk Puffs, known as Yoyos in America, on her stand. ‘These Yoyos were made from feed sack fabrics in the 1930s and were commonly used by newlywed brides to make quilt tops,’ Gertie told me.

Niki Fretwell’s stand was looking lovely as usual with its neatly folded fabrics and delicate handmade pieces. Maker Niki is a regular on the fair circuit and also has a shop, Nostalgia At No 1 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, where she sells the most delightful mix of vintage and handmade dolls, gifts and home accessories.

I was trading next door to talented maker Gillian Smelders, who designs and makes individual jewellery.

I also came across Thread & Ink from Leicestershire for the first time. I loved the nature-inspired, hand-printed and embroidered textiles and cards.

Emma Hollingsworth travelled from Bath for a browse and ended up finding what she’d been wanting for some time - a seersucker sundress. ‘It’ll look gorgeous with a pair of sandals and a tan,’ she smiled.

The next Vintage & Handmade event will be the Vintage & Handmade Spring Fair on 25th May.
