Salt and pepper are condiments with an illustrious history. In Ancient Rome, soldiers were paid in salt, hence the word 'salary', while pepper was referred to as 'black gold' in India.
Officially, a 'cruet set' holds bottles for oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and sometimes mustard. But, as with many gastronomic habits, we have the French to thank for slimming down our condiments.
