It goes without saying that in every issue we celebrate heritage, but this month we’ve packed the magazine to the rafters with long reads that rejoice in the craftsmanship of old buildings and antique treasures. From our open house story on the history of the National Trust’s Knole, to 15th-century Owlpen Manor, via a modern-day Grand Tour, following in the footsteps of noblemen and women, we are sure to inspire you with our variety of in-depth features.

Follow in the footsteps of 17th-century noblemen with our guide to lesser-known Italian sites and cities. - -

Elsewhere, Celia Rufey explores the intricate and labour-intensive technique known as crewelwork, Luke Honey details how to start a collection of black basalt sculptures, and Ellie Tennant gives us a buyer’s guide to pewter – a more accessible field than silver. And, to top this all off, Rhiannon Batten charts the history of the antiques shop – how dusty boutiques of bric-a-brac grasped the nation’s attention.

A quick flick through some of the highlights to look forward to this issue!
