Soon to be celebrating its 20th anniversary, the manufacturer Original BTC has proved to be a shining light in British design. Company founder Peter Bowles made frequent visits to the factory of his father’s lighting company – the iconic 1960s firm Cosmo Designs – during his childhood, something that was to later influence his own ideas.
‘I draw inspiration from childhood toys, 1940s design and, yes, traditional factory fittings,’ says Peter. Which explains industrial-style chrome pendant lights, the quirky teacup and saucer range, and the pleated glass shades collection, ‘Prismatic’.
‘Manufacturing in Britain is extremely important to us – outsourcing to the Far East is just not for me,’ says Peter. And so the bone china lampshades are produced in Stoke-on-Trent, brass shades are hand-spun and finished in Birmingham, while the rest of the fittings (including the company’s trademark woven, cotton braid cable) are hand-assembled in their Oxford workshop.
