The reputation of Portobello Road as an antiques hot spot could be under threat.
Lipka’s arcade has already been replaced by an All Saints clothing store, and the site of the Good Fairy Market, which closed earlier this year, could now also be turned into shops and apartments.
Dealers and residents have formed the Save Portobello Road Market campaign and are lobbying the council to stop more of Portobello being sold to developers.
Antiques Roadshow expert Simon Bull, who supports the campaign, remembers the road in the early 1970s. ‘Every shop was an antiques shop,’ he recalls. ‘It would be a tragedy if it became just a tourist attraction selling reproduction, junk and clothing’.
Find out more about the area in John Petty's new book: Portobello Road Photographed in the Sixties. Published by the Antique Collectors’ Club, it costs £12.95.
