Polar Sale: Scott & Amundsen Centenary, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 30th March
In January 1912 Captain Robert Scott (1868-1912) reached the South Pole only to find that a Norwegian team led by Roald Amundsen had beaten him by 33 days.
The centenary sees a raft of events commemorating Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition, not least this sale at Bonhams.
Top lot (estimate: £100,00-£150,000) is the farewell letter Scott wrote to Sir Edgar Speyer, honorary treasurer of the fund-raising committee for the trip. Other entries include this awe inspiring photograph (below left), ‘Cavern In An Iceberg’ (estimate: £3,000-£5,000) taken and signed in pencil by the official expedition photographer Herbert Ponting. The photograph above (estimate: £3,000-£5,000; being sold along with a copy of the book Scott’s Last Expedition) shows team members standing around Amundsen’s tent, and was recovered with the bodies of Scott and his team when they were discovered in November 1912.
