Alice Roberton reports on a day of decorative inspiration

Set in the house and grounds of the beautiful Eridge Park country estate, The Decorative Living Fair showcased some of the best in antique, vintage and decorative wares on Thursday 10th May. Painted furniture, textiles, handcrafts, clothing and gardenalia sat side-by-side in wonderful room sets, and H&A editor Angela Linforth had the tricky task of choosing the best-dressed stand.

Our own stand received a lot of visitors and it was lovely to talk to so many subscribers and readers. As well as magazines and homewares, we were selling these fabulous vintage storm lights (above) for Felix Lighting Specialists. Anne Spratling from Folkstone was delighted with her purchase of two lights, which will finish off the vintage look she wants to achieve in her new garden room.

Outside, I spotted Gisele Otter and friend carrying a kitchen shelf, bought from Theo & Bernice. Destined for her Shaker style kitchen, Gisele said ‘it will house my collection of decorative tins’ - how lovely!

I also caught up with Lucy Haywood who sells painted furniture, linens and handmade bags. H&A has just booked a stand at her Village Vintage event in Cuckfield, West Sussex on 7th July and I¹m really looking forward to it, especially the hay bale Champagne bar!

I couldn’t help notice Sally Carr buying this striking tweed jacket re-worked by Philippa Bowes (01934 713802). Philippa, from Somerset, designs jackets and coats and adds trimmings using Harris tweed, French linens and florals.

Inside the Georgian-style mansion, which was built in the 1930s, each room was filled with beautiful items to inspire, such as this lovely corner created by Chloe in the Orangery - complete with delicate frescos.

In the upstairs drawing room, next to H&A, was interior design company Ruston House with an inspirational display of wallpapers, upholstered furniture and home accessories.

Despite the unseasonal weather (there were torrential downpours for most of the day) the event was uplifting and inspirational, and spirits remained high - how very British!

Forthcoming fairs H&A will be attending, see you there.
