H&A at The Giant Vintage Rag Market, Frome, Somerset
Alice Roberton reports on a fabulous day of textile rummaging
On Saturday 30th June, the organisers of the ever-popular event, The Vintage Bazaar, staged a wonderfully successful day of high quality rummaging. The doors were thrown open at 9am to an eager crowd in search of textile remnants, buttons, silk threads, lace, ribbons, old patterns and pieces of one-off fabrics to take away and transform into something beautiful.
I caught up with co-organiser Lizzie Van Hasselt and Elaine Kirsch of Ted & Bunny to discuss the wonderful atmosphere and how the trend for using old to make new is going from strength to strength. ‘I’m delighted with the way the day is going and it’s lovely to see so many makers coming to do some serious buying,’ commented Liz.
I met Maud Lomberg, who runs a specialist linen company called Beyond France. ‘Everything we source is pre-1945 and many of our finest linens are handspun in Hungary,' she told me. 'People often buy my linens to make into curtains which complement both a traditional or modern home,’ she said.
Geraldine Duffy-Jentz had travelled from Marlborough in search of textiles and trimmings to make up into furnishings for her Victorian cottage. She bought the last of these lovely French vintage cotton cushion covers from the H&A stand and took out a subscription too. ‘I’m having a very successful day!’ she laughed.
I had a lovely chat with Kelly Rowe who is just starting up a vintage crockery hire company, Rowe & Rowe Vintage. Delighted to find the H&A stand, she quickly snapped up this pretty floral tea set to add to her growing collection.
There were so many eye-catching displays at this fair. I especially loved Jacquie Robinson’s (of Kitty’s) kitchenware doubling up as haberdashery storage and all the tempting little packets of ribbons and lace.
