Alice Roberton sets up shop H&A-style in the heart of Somerset

After a short summer break, it was lovely to be back on the road and heading to Somerset to have a stall at The Buttercross Vintage Market. I was selling copies of the October issue, subscriptions, wonderful pieces that have appeared in our summer issues as well as the new H&A Upcycling bookazine. Nicola Burge visited the stand and was over the moon to find she could buy the collection of 'iced gem' jugs we featured in the decorating feature in the September issue. Having lived in military housing all her married life, Nicola has just bought her first house and cannot wait to start putting colours on walls and making her mark.

I spotted Rosalind Davis snapping up lots of bright enamels for her online seaside collectables shop, Retro on Sea. Rosalind, who spent many years working for Laura Ashley, is hugely enthusiastic about selling quirky items that capture the traditional British seaside experience.

Kate Goodyear, who works for local National Trust property Lytes Cary, enjoys making things in her spare time and was delighted to buy some scraps of fabric from me to use for small appliqué houses. ‘I’m always on the lookout for fabric with small repeating patterns as the work I do is quite intricate,’ said Kate.

Fair organiser Mary Hossack (pictured above right) of furniture restoration and upholstery company Hossack & Gray, had a good thumb through the pages of H&A's new Guide to Upcycling 'bookazine' with Marina Wrixon of Vintage Jane and seemed to love it.

The Buttercross Vintage Market is set in the town's traditional Parish Rooms and spills out into a cobbled area outside. Sarah Jane from Lottie Loves Vintage was more than happy to be out in the September sunshine with her pretty collection of glassware, mirrors, quilts and crockery.

There were some lovely items at this market but, yet again, I had to resist buying! These 1940s American vintage storage jars were incredibly tempting though...

The next Buttercross Vintage Market is in the spring.

H&A will be visiting the following fairs this September. Hope to see you there!

Saturday 29th, 10am-4pm Vintage & Handmade Textile & Fashion Fair, Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire
