Alice Roberton enjoys meeting vintage enthusiasts on the south coast
The Guildhall Boutique Market in Portsmouth offers an eclectic mix of vintage, retro and handmade and is a great place to pick up thrifty fashion, accessories and items for the home. Local maker Rebecca Meaney of Fascinating Fascinators sells eye-catching vintage-inspired headpieces that she makes to order.
Zoe Calderwood of Handmade Treasures enjoyed a busy day selling pretty ribbons, buttons and all manner of haberdashery ‘I always stand at this fair and I have lots of loyal customers who come especially to buy my trimmings,' she said.
Next to my stall were mother and daughter Debra and Lydia Buchanan-Lee who trade as Kipper & Bow. As well as selling a great selection of ties, scarves, handbags and accessories they make this gorgeous bunting from the pages of old damaged books.
Natalie Rodgers, right, is creating an Orla Kiely look in her house and was on the lookout for coloured glass for a feature shelf. ‘I was inspired by the Orla Kiely news item in the February issue of Homes & Antiques,’ she said. She'll no doubt enjoy our coloured glass feature, too, which she'll find in the April issue, out on 4th March. Meanwhile, Gretta Williams bought a bamboo mirror from me, which she plans to hang above a pair of wall-mounted cinema chairs in her hall. It’s always great to hear about readers' homes and their fabulous ideas.
Portsmouth traders Calvin and Nicola Shulman of The Club House had a great array of curios on their table, including wooden kitchenalia, sporting paraphernalia, unusual tins and vintage lettering.
I had a lovely chat with Daryl and Gareth Bowen who sell heritage gentlemen's attire under the name of Bert & Walker. They also told me about how they set up the Vintage & Very Nice Market Bazaar in Chichester last year. 'It’s been really successful and we plan to run more events this year, with possibly some new locations too,’ enthused Daryl.
If you're a regular visitor to vintage, retro, antiques and handmade fairs then you might be interested in taking a look at our ‘One Year On The Road’ article in the March issue - it profiles some of the best fairs I visited in 2012. Here’s to many more!
