Alice Roberton heads back to Devon for some more vintage delights

My first visit to the Tavistock Vintage & Textile Fair was everything I’d hoped it would be. What's more, it proved yet again that Devon really is a hotbed for vintage. Gorgeous textiles and dresses were mixed in with delicate china and mirrors, while talented makers also showcased their work. Jo Hudgell from Cornish Fairy Vintage was selling some pretty items on her stand. ‘I gave up teaching to sell vintage and I’m loving it,’ she beamed.

I really liked the way Teresa Dunne of Willapark Designs uses textiles, paint and embellishment to create one-off mixed media works of art. ‘I’m studying textiles at Truro so my work is ever-changing,’ she said.

Anyone with a patchwork project in mind would have done well at the Sal’s Snippets Vintage Fabrics stall. Sally sells neatly cut and packaged pieces of fabric.

Talking of patchwork, Danielle Otness from nearby Lydford bought a couple of pieces from the Homes & Antiques stand. They had  appeared in the ‘Patchwork Harmony’ decorating feature in the February issue. ‘They’re going to look great on the back of a white sofa,’ said Danielle.

A familiar face, Amanda Stanbury from Shabby Chick, popped by to show me what she’d bought at the fair. ‘I’m very pleased with the bark-cloth and am planning on using the old record box as a handbag,’ she told me.

Kate Potts moved from London to set up her shop Homework in Tavistock. She told me how she’s been overwhelmed by how well her midcentury homewares have gone down with local buyers. ‘Tavistock appreciates a bit of Ercol,’ she added.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to ‘Tavi’ (as it’s known to the locals) and it was great to experience the wonderful mix of vintage available in the area.

If you're on the hunt for gorgeous textiles, then come along to Vintage & Handmade in Chipping Sodbury on Saturday 23rd February 23rd. H&A will be there!
