The 24th Bath Decorative Antiques Fair
Alice Roberton reports on four days of decorative and collectable delights
The Bath Decorative Antiques Fair is an annual get together of traders, collectors, interior designers and homemakers all jostling for the best in antiques and decorative wares. With its manageable size, friendly atmosphere and wonderful home-from-home room sets, this mecca of a fair has a real buzz about it. I caught up with Roadshow expert, and self confessed fan of the fair, Mark Hill on his stand where he was showing his extensive collection of Ricardia art deco pottery.
Our new agent James Hulme did a sterling job of manning the H&A stand for the four-day fair, with me and Homes & Antiques editor Angela Linforth lending a hand.
Angela spotted one of these gorgeously potted-up Lustreware teacups on the Town & Country Antiques stand. She couldn’t resist buying it as a memento of her day.
I recognised Karen Cull from Anton & K Decorative Antiques & Interiors as her home is featured in our April issue. Karen, who has transformed a dark thatched cottage in the Cotswolds into a light and airy home, has a lovely fresh style.
Father and son, Ross and Tristan Newman, were rather taken by this unusual piece of 19th century kitsch, a musical Black Forest ware coat hook found at Mark Newsum Antiques. Mark, who sells an enchanting selection of Mdina glass, treen, metalware and curios, trades at Winchcombe Arts & Antiques in Gloucestershire.
As is always the case at these events, traders buy from traders and John of John Cornall Antiques was no exception - he was pleased with the original 18th-century pub settle he bought from Terry Cusach of Appledore Antiques.
The DJ Green Antiques stand looked enticing, enough so for this delighted customer to snap up a French 1880-1890s library chair, freshly re-upholstered in Irish linen.
Alys Dobbie, of Nanadobbie, who won the Homes & Antiques best vintage/mid-century shop award in 2012, made her first appearance at the fair. She is also shortlisted for the National Antiques Week 2013 Young Guns Award, winners of which will be announced at the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair in Battersea, London on 25th April, as part of National Antiques Week.
