Brocante at Nonsuch Mansion, Cheam, Surrey
Alice Roberton visits a fair set in a stunning location which played host to the most fabulous selection of traders
With lavishly wallpapered state rooms, white canvas and freshly mown lawns, Grade II-listed Nonsuch Mansion in Surrey provided a wonderful setting for a ‘brocante’ last week, complementing around 40 beautiful stands offering pretty decorative wares. Organised by decorative antiques trader Nicky Page, this was the first event of its kind at the mansion.
I spotted Jane Eakhurst from Serendipity Reclamation snapping up this gilded venetian corner shelf from Jill Frost Vintage for a bargain £20, and spent the rest of the day kicking myself that I hadn’t seen it first!
Friends Jackie Heskin, Amanda Rooney and Jayne Crofts were shopping for their homes and were delighted with their finds. ‘We love upcycling, painting furniture, making soft furnishings and generally making our homes look beautiful,’ all three agreed.
The richly textured wallpaper within the house set antique textiles dealer Carla Saint Martin-Walls’ stand off beautifully.
Vanessa Peterkin, along with the help of friend Pippa Gray, was on the search for unusual pieces for her son's bedroom and was delighted to find Paul Drewett selling a whole pack of Lynes Bros Fox Terrier push-alongs. Paul will be bringing his impressive collection of pooches along to The Decorative Living Fair (sponsored by H&A) this Thursday, you won’t be able to miss them!
I just loved the French jars filled with linen stamps on the Belle Epoque stand. 'These French linen stamps would have been used to print the initials of the newlyweds on dowry linens so they could then be embroidered,’ owner Tamsin Court told me.
It was lovely to see Cuckfield Vintage Emporium organiser Darcy Shepherd and mum Irene Burns-Maclean. Darcy, who is expecting her second child in August, is just heading off to Dubai to see her sister. 'This gorgeous sponge bag made by Ernest and Matilda will be perfect for carrying all the bits I need for my stay,’ said Darcy. You'll find H&A's Jacquie Robinson at Darcy's next fair on Friday June 21st.
