All the magic of a French Brocante in a quintessentially English park
Set to the clinking sound of boules, the soft tones of jazz, the smell of fresh coffee and the gentle buzz of park life, The Bath Brocante in Lower Swainswick is a delightful event. Once a month, from May through to July, this small but perfectly formed brocante offers an eclectic mix of furniture, bric-a-brac, gardenalia and handmade goodness. Organiser Katherine Gilmore (pictured below right) has an eye for the unusual and loves the French way of life - something she’s been keen to emulate at her events.
H&A subscriber Samantha Rogers (above left) loves finding old items in need of some tender loving care. ‘I’ve just bought these 1930s metal foldaway chairs from Katherine which I’ll do up with some Ian Mankin or Cabbages & Roses fabric, but I’ll leave the paintwork just the way it is,’ she said.
The team from Vintage Marquees made a day of it by picknicking with friends while making use of their own stock; a set of original Weston-super-Mare deck chairs. The marquee pictured was made for them in Rajasthan. They also hire out an impressive range of vintage marquees themselves.
As soaring temperatures made this the hottest day of the year yet, Suzanne Lawler of Buttercups & Daisies Vintage, was grateful for fellow trader Claire Peacey of Empire Edibles' huge jar of lemon, rose and cucumber water (above).
10 month old Irish terrier Tallulah-May was not so much pooch of the day as hot dog of the day as she tried to stay firmly in the shade while her owners browsed the brocante.
Claire Richards was in the park to celebrate her 30th birthday at Alice Park Cafe and just couldn’t resist this 1960s push-along brick truck for her young son Herbie. ‘I love wooden toys and some of the older things are so much nicer than the very plastic toys of today,’ she commented.
