The Roxy Vintage & Handmade Fair, Cheddar, Somerset
The debut of a delightful fair organised by the people behind Axbridge’s much-loved Roxy cinema
The Roxy Vintage & Handmade Fair, a new event on the Somerset scene, went down a storm in Cheddar last Saturday (15th February) as organisers Jill Hunt, who also runs Pick & Mix Vintage, and Juliet Maclay welcomed over 600 visitors to the quaint church hall.
With a fabulous variety of traders offering kitchenalia, decorative wares, fashion, textiles and trimmings, alongside Roxy’s very own Deb 'n' Em’s pop-up cafe, it made for a great day out. To add to the fun, the nearby Roxy cinema, opened by Juliet and her husband David and is one of the smallest picture houses in the country, also threw open its doors to visitors for the day.
Laura Cross of Pinny & Petticoat recently gave up her housekeeping job to fulfil a longtime ambition to enter the vintage business. ‘I have a love of all things kitchen, especially Pyrex, and am not only selling at West Country street markets like Bridgwater and Frome but I also offer a vintage china hire service. I’m really enjoying it!’ she enthused.
Visitors Cait Daniels and Soraya Schofield of Axbridge loved their visit to the fair and were considering what they could do with this bold late Fifties/early Sixties bark cloth on Sue Meager’s stand Vintage To Victorian.
It was lovely to see seaside enthusiasts Rosalind and Michael Davis of Retro On Sea, who make such an effort with the display of their coastal-inspired collectables. They love the social side of trading and, although most of their business happens online, they always welcome customers to visit them at their home in Burnham-on-Sea.
Mother and daughter Jill and Iona Croskell found these two 1950s shirts for Iona at The Washerwoman’s stand. One was a pretty, white embroidery anglaise while the other had a bold silk-scarf style print.
On the subject of fashion, this showstopping 1950s cocktail dress (and matching collectors' Barbie) is the very design worn in the first season of Mad Men by actress January Jones, who plays Betty Draper. Flora Smiles Vintage Style owner Sarah Stammers told me about the huge amount of work that would have gone into making such a beautiful garment.
Rob and Maggie Stonor from Shepton Mallet bought this stylishly upcycled table from Helen’s Retro Home ‘It will fit perfectly into our conservatory, which has an extension of the garden theme to it,’ said Maggie. Roll on spring so we can all sit and enjoy the outdoors again!
Do come and see H&A at a fair near you for great magazine and subscription offers as well as lots of other tabletop treats. This is where you’ll find our team throughout the next few weeks...
