Question:

I believe my lantern clock is quite old. Could you tell me more about it and what it might be worth?
Zanthe Lauder, London

Answer:

Your clock was originally made c1740, but like the majority of brass table lantern clocks, it has been heavily altered. A Victorian movement has replaced the Georgian original, and plates have been riveted on top and bottom to block up the space where the original escapement and pulleys would have been. The chapter ring is still the original, however. In this state, it would be worth around £1,500.
