Question:

I have been given a collection of matches from the 1940s. Can you tell me any more about them?
Louise Spears, by email

Answer:

The smart word for the collecting of matchboxes and matchbox labels is phillumeny. Collectors seek early examples and those associated with particular events, or with advertising. Few are valuable and condition is very important. Your group is interesting because it features boxes in their original wrappers. But as all the names are well known the value is minimal.
