I am curious to find out about the origin and value
of this unusual chair, which has been in my family
for many years.

Answer: 

You have a conservatory chair that was made in the 1930s. It is in beech wood that would originally have been stained. The fret-cut back splat has been laminated for extra strength and the seat would originally have been caned. If re-caned, the piece would be worth in the region of £60-£80.
