This festive scene was painted by German landscape artist and representative of the prestigious Munich School group, Anton Doll (1826-1887). Known for his works depicting city views of his hometown of Munich, especially winter scenes showing the surrounding rural villages, his desire to paint more festive views took him on excursions to the foothills of the Alps, Switzerland and northern Italy.
Doll was heavily inspired by painters such as Peter von Hess and Carl August Lebschèe, and his painterly landscapes are best seen displayed at the Neue Pinakothek gallery in Munich. That said, there are a number on the market. This particular example is signed by the artist and comes in a hand-finished gold leaf frame.
