December – A jewel in the crown

Feel like a queen for the day in this gilded home – it royally sets the standard. It occupies a towering position on the English skyline and was built just after the Norman conquest, with key rooms lavishly restyled in the early 19th century in a later-Georgian style. Despite a devastating fire in the 1990s, the interior has been skilfully restored to glory with gold-encrusted ceilings and walls. Some of the finest works of art by Holbein, Van Dyck and Rubens gaze down on visitors.

The prize

If you think you know this month’s mystery home, you could be in with a chance of winning this Christmas Joy half-pint mug, worth £19.95, from queen of colourful ceramics Emma Bridgewater. Based in the heart of the Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent, Emma’s factory has been making your
everyday cup of tea just that little bit more special since 1985.
