The Christmas show at Tobias and the Angel in Barnes, London, is the place to go to get into the festive spirit. For four days, the shop closes as Angel and her team arrange their hand made Christmas decorations and embellish the shop with Christmas trimmings before the big reveal. Among many other things, this year’s ‘Opus Magnum’ is Angel’s star decoration – a ‘fantasy globe’ adorned by her with vintage fabrics, braids and pins. You’ll also find knitted Santas created from a Sixties knitting pattern – ‘I love the size of their stomachs’, she says – a box full of paper party hats, Turkish slippers and a mohair Christmas tree. Her sister, Barbara, is also selling her range of delicious products made from scents and essential oils, Knot’s Elementals. All guaranteed to put you in a happy, festive mood.
To see Angel’s private collection of Victorian tree decorations see the January issue of Homes and Antiques, on sale now.
The shop shuts up for four days while Angel and her team of elves prepare to reveal the Christmas show…
…and they work night and day to make sure that everything is ready in time.
Round and jolly: Angel’s Sixties-style knitted Santas are £45 each.
This year’s centrepiece decorations: ‘Opus Magnum’ baubles, £215 each.
Much more classy than a paper hat from a cracker are Angel’s hand-printed paper, feather and gilt braid party hats. Six come in a hand-blocked hat box for £385.
